Thursday- Jedburgh to Yetholm

Today the photographs have uploaded in reverse, and as I'm without wi-fi, it will have to do! So, spoiler alert, we completed the planned walk for the day successfully!

Delicious curry which we carried all day in microwavable packets, as we knew the shop in Yetholm would be shut when we arrived, and microwave was our only option for cooking in tonight's accommodation. Worth the effort!

The tiny side building here is our home for the night.

Very achey feet demanded a foot soak in the river!

A common sighting today!

The last portion of today's hike involved hiking over Wideopen Hill, which is pictured in the middle here

The summit of Wideopen Hill. We thought this would be tough to get to with tired legs, but it actually was nice to have a change of pace, and the uphill walking felt more familiar to us than strolling down country lanes. However the downhill after the summit was tougher on the feet!

Looking from Wideopen summit in the direction we came from. This is the highest point of St Cuthbert's Way, except the optional Cheviot diversion which is a choice for tomorrow (five miles further and a lot higher! With how my feet feel today I'm not sure this would be wise!)

We were treated to intermittent sun in the afternoon

We were really excited to sample St Cuthbert's coffee shop in Morebattle, which is in an old church. This was two thirds of the distance of the day, and just before the large ascent, so would have been a welcome refueling stop.  New looking signs outside the village suggested it would be open, however we arrived to find it for sale! Booo!

The day had a few road sections, and although a bit boring visually, they were easier to get a march on and clock up a few miles.

Baby coos near Morebattle

Blossoms, Blackthorn I think

This feeding trough in the grounds of Cesspool castle might have been a sofa, it felt so welcome and comfy to sit on!

Cesspool castle, once the home of the Kerrs. They were powerful in the area- amazing to see that even such a powerful fortress falls to ruin in the end if left to it's own devices.

A lovely green valley

Lots of signs of spring, but so many autumn leaves also

More storm damage. Can you spot the sign post in the middle?

Lots of views like this to start the day, which was undulating, and often on roads or tracks beside farm fields.

We didn't pass a bench without a sit today!

Please close the gate

Muddy, but avoidable!

Dere street is a Roman road we followed for many miles yesterday, but just a few metres today, and is how our walk of the day began (after the couple of miles to rejoin the route from Jedburgh.
